Well before the changes made on the M4 with the WestConnex project, in August 2012, I had an idea of what could occur to get 4 lanes in each direction between Cumberland Highway and a tunnel between Homebush Bay Drive and Concord Road.
I've split this up into 4 files, each between 11MB and 16MB. Furhter down is a short summary of the proposed changes.
Part 1 (14MB) - Cumberland Highway to Pitt Street|
Part 2 (14MB) - Pitt Street to 'Old Tolls'
Part 3 (16MB) - 'Old Tolls' to Birnie Avenue
Part 4 (11MB) - Birnie Avenue to Concord Road Cumberland Hwy to Coleman St
Add lane eastbound by expanding into northern side of motorway Coleman St to Church St
Existing in both directions
Church St to 'old Tolls'
Use current viaduct for westbound traffic and new tunnel eastbound. Potential uses of the single westbound lane on the viaduct between James Ruse Drive entrance and exit could be bus only or emergency only.
'Old Tolls' to Silverwater Rd
Add lane westbound and modify eastbound lanes. Note that Silverwater Rd traffic is now unable to exit at James Ruse Drive
Silverwater Rd to Homebush Bay Drive
Additional lanes in median in in both directions. Upgrading of Silverwater Rd, Haslams Creek, Hill Rd and Birnie Ave bridges will need to take place.
Homebush Bay Drive to Concord Rd
Additional lanes on then northern side of motorway, with M4 East traffic entering tunnel at separate locations.
