The Metroad system was developed during the early 1990s with Metroad 4 the first route to be fully signed in late 1992. The remainding routes all followed in 1993.
- Metroad 1 directly replaced National Route 1, the major north-south highway through Sydney
- Metroad 2 is the major route from Sydney to the north-western suburbs, stretching from Lane Cove to Windsor
- Metroad 3 is the inner-most circumferential route stretching from Mona Vale on Sydney's northern beaches to the Princes Highway at Blakehurst
- Metroad 4 was first signposted closely following the opening of the Mays Hill-Prospect section of the Western Freeway. Within 12 months, The motorway and Metroad 4 were extended west to Lapstone
- Metroad 5 began at the Cross Roads intersection at Casula where it met National Highway 31 and State Route 89 and terminated in Ultimo
- Metroad 7 stretched from the Wahroonga to Heathcote and providing a bypass for traffic passing between the Pacific Highway and the Hume and Princes Highways
